The showerMy sister is blessed with lots of love and support from two families. That meant planning two baby showers. I am a teacher through and through so I've heard many studies that emphasize the important of a strong vocabulary which is gained through reading so naturally a book theme made sense to me. Know that our cover for the surprise party was our family thanksgiving so some of this overlaps with thanksgiving themes, but you'll see how easy it would be to eliminate those themes.
Fun and GamesWe had a book for everything.

Today, we had an all school presentation to talk about our talents for a short minute. I spoke about Squishy and how I made him but wondered why I had. Yeah, sure he was cute but now what? I got an email from a coworker with a link that showed me the perfect place for him to go. A movement has been started in Denmark and is spreading across Europe to provide crocheted octopi to premature babies in NCIU. They are believed to help calm the babies because the tentacles remind the babies of the umbilical cord. They found that babies with the octopi were less likely to pull out their tubes (source).
What an amazing use for a simple talent! I can't wait to donate Squishy to a new friend that needs him! ![]() With all the continued talk on Facebook about our new president and his administration, I came to a realization: I love myself how most people love our government. Mostly, we do love our country. It provides us many opportunities that other countries don't get, and freedom. Although we aren't perfect, most of our citizens are afforded the right to feel safe. We have accomplished many amazing things as a nation. We've been to the moon, we've kicked butt at the Olympics, we won our independence and have shared that with many. We entertain the world and are free to roam it. We have the opportunity to try to be anything we want and our country will accept and help protect you. Not to mention it is just so beautiful and diverse. However, for most of us, it's easy to lose sight of those good things. We talk about how much money our country owes. We go to the post office and the DMV and in both we wait in long lines and are asked to pay money. We argue about trivial things and linger on all the new laws we don't agree with. We get frustrated that there are so many regulations and rules and in turn forget all of our freedoms granted by the same government we curse. This is me. I'm very thankful for my life. Overall, when I look at it I marvel at all that God has given me. I carry no daily guilt. I have a heart to be compassionate and find genuine pleasure in serving others. I am addiction free and surrounded by loved ones. I always get enough to eat and have a home. My life is a great one and I am fearfully and wonderfully made. And yet, in my daily encounters with myself I see my shortcomings, I see myself crying in the closet because I burned the chocolate for the upcoming event at work. I see all the areas where I lack in teaching. I see where I annoy my amazing husband with my foolish self pity and wonder why he married me forgetting all the amazing things I have already said about myself.
I may be the only one in this situation, but if I'm not alone, I encourage us all to stop losing gratitude for the overall picture because of temporary flaws that haven't been worked out yet. It's okay to recognize the changes that still need to be made. It's only through this recognition that we (or our country) will ever get better, however, do not forget to step back every now and again and take a breath, pat yourself on the back and thank God for all that you do have going for you. |
